Celeb Twitter Round-Up: Fellow Sans Show Support for Grace Mondlana
Influencers often get a bad rep because they transform day-to-day moments into marketing opportunities or sell the kind of authenticity that makes the average person wonder whether they are experiencing an overly enthusiastic store mannequin, or a human being making their life a full-time job. However, sometimes life makes you see the person behind the personal brand, and then the internet shows its tender human side.
Content creator Grace Mondlana recently had a health scare which led to an eight-night hospital stay, emergency ankle surgery and a neurological diagnosis.
The 25-year-old influencer collapsed while walking down the stairs of her Gauteng home on 27 July. Eventually, her helper called for medical services after hearing the dogs’ barking and discovering her unresponsive on the floor.
While she initially attributed the fainting spell to exhaustion, medical scans later revealed a torn and sprained ligament in her ankle which required surgical intervention. Further testing, including an electroencephalogram to measure brain activity, uncovered an underlying neurological condition that caused the initial collapse.
Mondlana shared a diary-style hospital vlog last Monday, 3 August, documenting her treatment, IV lines, and physiotherapy sessions. Her closest humans – parents, siblings, grandmother and fellow influencers – visited her in person and posted messages of encouragement online.
Now discharged, the University of Pretoria graduate is managing her newly discovered condition with specialist care, medication, and ongoing physical therapy. Mondlana expressed deep gratitude to her family, medical staff, and supporters for guiding her through the ordeal, a sentiment that got all of the online tweeps sharing their support for her recovery and amazement at her dedication.
Her vlog also sparked broader social media discussions surrounding boundaries in health-related content and its appropriateness. The conversation hovered between users sharing their personal opinions on how it can be relieving to share one’s day-to-day burdens, while others thought it is impersonal to share such vulnerable moments.
Of course, someone took the conversation to its most extreme by raising the idea that eventually someone will livestream an actual death due to desensitisation.
Then you had those Twitterati asking blunt questions and showing little tact regarding another person’s misfortune, such as trying to figure out the timeline of when Mondlana hurt her ankle and how the information she provided coincided with the sequence of events.
Those online persons who knew better were quick to point out that dates don’t matter but it’s more appropriate to show concern for a person who was clearly injured.
Mondlana stepped in after a few days to correct the errors she had made in her captions and clarified when the incident happened. Right on cue, so many wagging tongues were silenced.
One thing was and is certain: Twirra protects its favourites and users were quick to point out that you do not mess with someone who is well received on these social media apps. Right or wrong, online folks come for you!
What’s your take? Do you think personal moments and tragedies should remain private, or should social media stars share all aspects of life, even the ugly parts, to showcase true authenticity?
